I was born in Sioux Falls, S.D., but moved to Texas when I was in second grade. I grew up in Houston and attended the University of Texas in Austin. I enrolled in Air Force ROTC (Reserve Officers Training Corps) for a year and really wasn't enthusiastic about it. They didn't have a lot of pilot slots at the time.rnA friend told me about the Marine Corps Platoon Leaders Course, and that one could get a guaranteed pilot slot. It sounded too good to be true. The officer recruiter in Austin was a lieutenant who had just returned from Operation Desert Storm. I was totally impressed by him. I finally found somebody in the military who I wanted to be like. It was the best decision I ever made.
