Royal Australian Navy Modernization Plan in Full Swing

The Royal Australian Navy (RAN) reached several major milestones in its modernization program recently with the completion of construction contracts for the Hobart-class destroyer and Canberra-class Amphibious Ship programs. The RAN also accepted the second of four frigates to be modernized under the FFG Upgrade Project. The Australian government and the Spanish shipbuilding firm Na-vantia signed a transfer of technology contract Oct. 4 to officially begin the construction phase of the Hobart program. All three Hobart-class destroyers will be built at Australia's ASC Pty Ltd. and other yards in Western Australia, Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and Tasmania under the $6.7 billion contract.
