Striking a Balance: Corps aims to be well protected and well armed, yet light enough to rapidly deploy in future conflicts

The Marine Corps is preparing for a future based on small but lethal units that can operate in austere environments and cover expansive areas that in the past were tackled by battalions. Their springboard most likely will be ships, from which their equipment will be assembled and deployed. The Corps not only is developing its assault vehicles and ships for that future, but also technologies that would allow dispersed units to be self-sufficient for longer periods of time without relying on the battalion.
