The Coast Guard began using HH-65 Dolphin helicopters in the mid-1980s. The fleet received no substantial upgrades until the HH-65 Conversion Sustainment project started in 2004 under the service's sweeping Deepwater modernization program. The goal is to modernize the fleet in six segments over 12 years. Once converted, the helicopter will be renamed the MH-65C Multi-Mission Cutter Helicopter.
