On Jan. 1, 1962, the Navy created its first two SEAL teams. Since then, the SEALs have expanded in size and capability, earning these highly skilled Sailors a reputation as being among the world's most elite special forces. This reputation is borne out by the number of Medals of Honor earned by members of these Navy units. Of the 16 Medals of Honor received by Navy personnel since 1961, one-quarter of them have gone to SEALs.
