When Germany surrendered to the allies in May 1945, the German Navy's submarine force, despiternsevere losses after six years of war, had 62 submarines deployed in the Atlantic and as far away as what is now Malaysia. The force remained armed and highly potent, manned by crews with unbroken morale.
