Unmanned Fire Scout helicopters began flying reconnaissance missions for U.S. forces in Afghanistan in May, beaming hundreds of hours of full-motion video to troops on the ground. Able to remain aloft for up to eight hours, Fire Scouts flying off the frigate USS Halyburton helped allied forces pick targets for NATO bombers in Libya and searched for pirates off Somalia. Armed with daylight and infrared cameras, the unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have ushered the Navy into the fast-growing field of unmanned intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (1SR) — and into the frustrating realm of intelligence information overload.
