I joined the U.S. Coast Guard after high school because its life-saving mission was extremely attractive for me. I graduated from the [Coast Guard Academy] class of 1996 and have held a number of aviation and intelligence positions during my 17-year career.Some of those stops included being a deck watch and boarding officer, doing the service's migrant interdiction mission aboard the Cutter Confidence. This was my first job after graduating from the Coast Guard Academy and during my time there, in 1997, we were involved in a major ferry rescue off the coast of Haiti when a 60-foot vessel overturned. It was a noble mission and we saved as many lives as we could.
