As president of the Navy League's New York Council, retired New York Naval Militia Rear Adm. J. Robert Lunney, along with his council, works to support the sea services in the nation's largest city, and part of that support includes promoting naval history and heritage. For example, the council awards the Commodore John Barry Book Award, which honors an outstanding work on American naval history to deserving authors.However, Lunney, who retired from the Navy Reserve as a captain, not only promotes history, he once helped to make it. Sixty-three years ago, the Navy veteran of World War II served as a staff officer of U.S. Merchant Marine Victory ship SS Meredith Victory. Built during World War II, Meredith Victory had been laid up in the James River, Va., when on June 25, 1950, the North Korean People's Army stormed south to unite the peninsula under Communist rule.
