As the U.S.-flag Merchant Marine girds for possible sequestration cuts in fiscal 2014 that could directly impact the commercially owned and operated ships that provide military sealift needs, the industry is working hard to strengthen its key maritime programs, while monitoring the potential for new shipping demands and job growth in the energy industry. Opinions across the maritime industry - including those from the Maritime Administration (MARAD), the American Maritime Congress and the Seafarers International Union (SIU) - see long-term promise in the burgeoning energy sector, including the export of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and offshore wind farm construction and maintenance. Driving the outlook is outspoken support from maritime interest groups to not only find new ways to grow the U.S.-flag industry, but also spur commercial mariner job growth.
