The surface warfare module for the Navy's littoral combat ship (LCS) program has been problematic, primarily because of the surface-to-surface missile. 1. After the Army abandoned development of its Non-Line-of- Sight (NLOS) missile system, the Navy in 2011 considered the Griffin missile for the LCS. 2. The Navy announced earlier this year it was giving up the Griffin in favor of the Longbow Hellfire AGM-114L missile to handle the surface-to-surface strike mission. 3. The service must look for a long-term solution for surface-to-surface warfare as it redefines what the next-generation frigate will look like and the capabilities it will need.
