Crowdsourcing, which relies on people to do something that computers cannot, dates back at least 200 years. 1. One of its earliest uses was to solve "The Longitude Problem" for British Sailors in 1714. 2. Compilers of the Oxford English Dictionary in 1858 asked 800 volunteers to identify all of the words in the English language and provide examples of their usage. 3. Probably the largest example of crowdsourcing occurred last March when millions volunteered to search satellite images for clues to the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370.
