I was born in Port of Spain, Trinidad, West Indies. At the age of 10, I migrated to the United States with my family. I am the seventh of nine children. We resided in Roselle, NJ. On April 2, 1987, I joined the Navy, three years after my sister joined the Army.My original goal was to be a police officer and then it shifted to being a private investigator, but I decided to look at the military. I spoke with the Air Force. I actually signed up, qualified and was set up to go, but I wasn't going to be able to leave for boot camp for seven months and I didn't want to wait that long. So I told my recruiter, "Hey, look, I'm ready to go. I'm ready to get out of New Jersey, there's nothing going on here."
