In May 1986, I graduated from the University of Florida on a Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps scholarship and was commissioned as a second lieutenant. Upon completion of The Basic School, I reported to the Naval Air Station (NAS) Pensacola, Fla., for primary flight instruction and earned my wings in October 1988 at NAS Meridian, Miss. I reported to Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Cherry Point, N.C., for AV-8B transition training. While serving with [Marine Attack Squadron] VMA-231, I completed two deployments, first to Iwakuni, Japan, and then to Southwest Asia, where I participated in Operation Desert Storm.
