Commander: The Life and Exploits of Britain's Greatest Frigate Captain is a long-overdue study of Sir Edward Pellew, a man of renown in his time, who also became well known to later generations as the mentor to the title character in C. S. Forester's Horn-blower saga. Unfortunately, until this biography, Pellew had received scant attention from those committed to the study of naval leadership. As his career spanned the years encompassing the American Revolution, the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars, and subsequent hostilities with the Barbary Pirates, he was, for fame's sake, ill starred to have earned his laurels in the Age of Nelson. Fortunately, in his endeavors to rescue Pellew from neglect, Stephen Taylor has succeeded in producing a well-researched and highly sympathetic treatment of one of history's great, but unfairly overlooked, naval officers.
