My mother's house is 429 miles away from mine, and 12 turns separate our driveways. Making these turns in the right sequence is the most important aspect of the trip. All of the turns are necessary, but the first few are most critical, and the significance of each decreases as I get closer to her house. The first turn is a left out of my driveway. If I go right instead and travel 429 miles, I will be nearly 858 miles off course, and I will never get to my mother. Conversely, if I make an incorrect 12th turn, I will already be in her neighborhood, maybe 125 ft away—not too far off course.
