Baur et al. quote our statement that our Review aimed to "consider the role of nutrient-sensing signaling pathways in mediating the beneficial effects of dietary restriction." However, they failed to quote the next sentence: "We focus on processes that are evolutionarily conserved in multiple organisms and discuss the evidence for their potentially protective, and detrimental, effects in humans." Although much work has been published on sirtuins, and they undoubtedly play an important role in health and disease (1, 2), no publications have experimentally demonstrated that altered sirtuin activity can increase mammalian life span.
