The rubbing of a balloon on your hair or the accumulation of charge as you walk across a carpet are well-known examples of contact electrification. In the familiar lab experiment of rubbing an ebonite rod with a piece of wool, it is commonly believed that electrons transfer from the wool to the rod, so that the wool becomes positively charged and the rod negatively charged.
