Water, energy and waste: The great European deal for the environment

Does watching your favourite TV series affect the environment? While everyone expects that watching television involves the consumption of energy, not everyone realizes that large quantities of water are required to produce energy. Just as not everyone knows that if energy from alternative sources is used, it was most likely produced from our waste or from the same corn that was used to produce the popcorn that accompanies our vision (Hasan et al., 2020; Naddeo, 2020). In recent years, increased awareness to public health and environmental protection issues, concerns about land use, resource loss and climate change, have drawn attention to genuinely sustainable management strategies (Tyagi et al., 2018). The conscious use of strategic resources, such as water and energy, and of our by-products, notably various wastes, is one of the biggest challenges facing modern society. In recent years, the critical issues relating to the availability of uncontaminated water resources and the growing use of energy have played an increasingly important role for developed economies in the debate on environmental protection (Al-Saidi and Elagib, 2017).
