Nuclear Safety Commission Basic Policies

The Nuclear Safety Commission (NSC) issued a new program to cope with safety-related problems in Japan and to reorganize the system of the various institutions in charge of implementing safety research in July 2004. An extensive review was conducted of the implementation of the measures outlined in the January 2000 basic policies, and it was found that most of these have been successfully carried out. During the next five years, NSC will research the following areas; 1) implementation of risk information gathered from at home and abroad; 2) the aging of nuclear facilities, reactor decommissioning and radioactive waste management, and verification of the integrity of light water reactor facilities; 3) measures to guarantee safety against criticality, and intermediate nuclear fuel storage facilities; 4) safety regulations for radioactive waste disposal; 5) evaluating the safety of fast breeder and new types of reactors; 6) the physiological effects of radiation; 7) means to avoid disasters at nuclear energy sites.
