I would like to introduce the multimedia experiments being conducted at NTT by making a few predictions for the near future and by describing our outlook on these new services. NTT announced its projects for multimedia communications testing in 1994. At that time, the Internet was not as developed as we see it today, but computers had already spread among the general public and their memory capacity and processing capabilities were already high. On the other hand, in the field of communications, optical fiber cables were distributed in may areas nationwide and the introduction of fiber-optic technologies were advancing among the access networks. In addition, image compression technologies were being incorporated in software and hardware technologies and a new standard called the MPEG had already been born.
