Sojourning for Freedom: Black Women, American Communism, and the Making of Black Left Communism

Black women on the left have truly begun to receive their scholarly due in the past few years. Shirley Graham Du Bois, Claudia Jones, and Eslanda Robeson have been the subjects of books by Gerald Home, Carole Boyce Davies, and Barbara Ransby, respectively. A collection of essays edited by Dayo Gore, Jeanne Theoharis and Komozi Woodard re-evaluates black freedom struggles in the United States from World War II through the 1970s by investigating the activism and leadership of black women. A monograph by Gore is devoted to black women's radicalism during the Cold War. The first book-length treatment of African American women of the Old Left, Sojourning for Freedom, is in dialog with such groundbreaking scholarship while contributing much that is new to studies of radicalism, race, and gender and sexuality. Drawing on more than forty oral interviews that he conducted with black Communist women, their families and associates, McDuffie presents a rich, revelatory history.
