摘要

'Netflix, Facebook, and the NSA: They're all in it together'. So ran the title of a piece in Salon1 shortly after the public disclosure that the US National Security Agency, with the help of companies like Google and Microsoft, collects information on the phone calls and internet activities of US citizens and people around the world. Corporate-government cooperation, and occasionally conflict, are central issues in the 17 chapters contained in Transnational Culture in the Internet Age. While the focus, as the title suggests, is on culture rather than privacy, the two are related through the concept of identity, which is increasingly susceptible to change in a highly-connected world. One take-home message from this wide-ranging and timely edited volume is that the internet blurs borders of all kinds.
