There have now been several decades of research dedicated to how risk assessment and management are insufficient or inadequate tools to address the ambiguous and multivalent ways in which our societies are intertwined with technological development and environmental contexts. This period has also seen the continual rise of the use of the concept of risk and the tools associated with it in all manner of governance spheres. One of the potential reasons for this disconnect is the lack of a strong alternative concept that is coupled to robust methodologies to directly relate the concept to the study of technology and governance. This book fills this void by turning our attention to the construction and governance of vulnerability in technological cultures.
