Beyond Bibliometrics states its aspirations on its back cover: This book describes recent theoretical and practical advances in metrics-based research, examining a variety of alternative metrics... while also considering ethical and cultural consequences of relying on metrics to assess the quality of scholarship. While it delivers on this promise, it actually does much more, and this 'other' or 'more' makes me rather enthusiastic. To put it differently, I think the self-appraisal rather modest.
