Founded in 1781, the Massachusetts Medical Society is the oldest continuously operating medical society in the country. But it is best known as publisher of the prestigious, and lucrative, New England Journal of Medicine, which boasts a circulation of more than 240,000, and has been in the spotlight in recent weeks because of the ouster of its longtime editor-in-chief, Jerome Kassirer.
