Taming the Future or Surfing Uncertainty?

The connections between scientific-and now technoscientific-knowledge and transformations in political rationality have long been the focus of sociological investigation, from Weber and Marx through the Frankfurt School and beyond. The ways in which knowledge helps social actors make sense of and live with an uncertain future play a central role in constituting political rationalities-and indeed in constituting rationality more generally (Adam and Groves, 2007). This volume contains a series of essays that examine the variety of ways in which the relationship between technoscience and neoliberalism revolves around the domestication (and sometimes, the 're-wilding') of an intrinsically uncertain future. In doing so, they point to ambiguities that open up some central questions about the significance of risk and uncertainty for neoliberalism, and suggest important avenues for future research.
