RADIOACTIVE WASTES-GENERATION, MANAGEMENT AND RADIOLOGICAL IMPACT ON HUMAN ENVIRONMENT

Management of radioactive wastes generated through human activities has now become a global issue, although the radiation exposures caused by the artificial sources is very low ( ～ 5) in comparison to that caused by the natural radioactive sources (～ 95), prevailing in human environment. Concerted and coordinated efforts are continuously being made by the nuclear scientists and technologists of the world for efficient management of these nuclear wastes in accordance with the norms and regulations of national and international radiation protection bodies to minimize radiation doses from these modified sources to the present as well as our future generations. In general, production of radioactive wastes from man-made activities, their management and radiological impact on human environment, have been discussed.
