When it conies to combating Alzheimer's disease, Neuro Biologists need all the help they can get. So far, efforts to develop drugs that halt or reverse the relentless brain degeneration have met with modest success. The few approved therapies slow cognitive decline, but only temporarily, possibly because they do not target the root cause of the disease. Drugs are aimed at reducing production of amyloid beta (AP), a protein fragment thought to be the instigator of nerve cell death driving Alzheimer's disease. And now researchers are taking a closer look at another possible target, a protein called tau.
