摘要

Over the last forty years or so, the practice of the Green Revolution had been instrumental in achieving increased crop yields wherein a combination of plant breeding, agrochemical applications and irrigation was utilized to maximize yields in the cereal crops, especially in rice and wheat. By all assessments this was a successful approach and in wheat crops it led to a 130% increase in yields. Due to these improved agricultural practices our country was not only able to greatly increase its food self sufficiency but also had reduced its financial commitment for food imports and controlled the destruction of its natural habitats.
