RADIOLOGICAL SAFETY AND GREEN ENVIRONMENT

The long term energy security and energy independence is of prime importance to the sustained development and growth of our country. This poses an immense challenge as the fuel resources are limited and their long time availability are not guaranteed. The other constraint to India's energy needs comes from selection of energy sources. The selected source should not only have low cost, low land use and easy availability but should equally be environment friendly. With these parameters in view, the nuclear power is the best option as it is a green and clean power. This paper presents a detailed discussion on the various energy options available and the merits and demerits in terms of environmental friendliness. A detailed discussion is provided on the safety features of Indian Nuclear Power Plants, emergency preparedness and features for ensuring the environmental safety around the power plants. It is concluded that vast potential of nuclear energy makes it as the right choice for India as it is quite consistent with the goals of achieving true energy independence.
