Vitamin B12 Deficiency in Cardiovascular Disorders in India

Cardiovascular diseases have reached epidemic proportions in India; mortality due to CAD increased from 1.17 million in 1990 to 1.59 million in 2000, and is estimated to increase to around 2.6 million by 2020. More importantly, deaths related to cardiovascular disease occur five to ten years earlier in India than they do in western countries. Among Indian men, about half of all CAD cases occur under the age of 50 and 25% cases occur under the age of 40. The cost of managing such complex disorders is astronomical and is increasingly affecting the working populace and our economy as a whole.
