C-band valuation estimates surging as 5G spectrum auction interest intensifies

A recent survey of investors suggests the monestisation of C-band could generate valuations much higher than a previous estimate, as 5G auction interest intensifies even under a US government shutdown shadow. FSS satellite operators Intelsat (NYSE:I), SES (EPA:SESG) as well as chipmaker Intel (NASDAQ:INTC) made the initial proposal to free a portion of C-band (3.7-4.2 GHz frequency) last year, with fellow operators Eutelsat (EPA:ETL) and Telesat later assenting to the idea with the formation of the C-Band Alliance (CBA). The groups most recent proposal will free up to 200MHz of mid-band spectrum under its updated proposal to US regulator the FCC - an increase from the initial plan of 100MHz - to be reallocated for 5G terrestrial use, though there is criticism from wireless companies about whether the amount is sufficient.
