Meet the new VSAT: Moving from VSAT to SIT to broadband

Many new satellite-based communication networks and legacy satellite very small aperture terminal (VSAT) networks are moving towards a standards-based environment. This move will fuel equipment provider innovation, increase features and facilitate the integration of a plug-and-play satellite-based interface with local area networks (LAN) and wide area networks (WAN). With the emergence of the Internet and the Web, and the subsequent demand for network access, TCP/IP-based networks have spread like wildfire. VSAT technologies have also been evolving as part of a larger sophisticated network of networks. Next generation broadband VSATs, or Satellite Interactive Terminals (SIT), are based on open standards that are widely accepted and deployed.
