As part of the work of its Safety at Sea programme, Swedish research organisation Vinnova is financing a project intended to develop design rules and scaling models for water mist fire-fighting systems. Two companies are involved in the project, Marioff Hi-Fog Oy of Finland and Tyco Fire Products from the USA. A first series of experiments has been carried out by the Swedish National Testing and Research Institute in an engine room with a volume of 500m~3. Three types of extinguishing system were tested: 1. A 500l/min water spray system, operating at 2 bar, and meeting the requirements in the SOLAS Convention. 2. A 97l/min low-pressure system, operating at 12 bar. 3. A 60l/min high-pressure system, operating at 70 bar. The trials involved various sizes of fires and degrees of ventilation. In addition, scenarios with hidden and open fires were also tested. All the trials used a pool fire as the fire source, burning either heptane or diesel fuel.
