Gangway accidents

Recently we had two accidents involving shore personnel, due to improper maintenance and rigging of portable gangways.rnOn the first vessel, a portable gangway, without proper guard rails, was temporarily rigged aft from the accommodation deck. This was to facilitate easy access for ship's personnel to monitor the after-draught during cargo loading. When a stevedore used this access to board the vessel, some of the railings became dislodged because of their poor condition, causing him to fall and sustain severe injuries.rnOn the other vessel, the portable gangway was half withdrawn and left unsecured while the regular gangway was being rigged. As a stevedore tried to disembark the vessel, the unsecured gangway fell into the water and he fell on to the wharf, sustaining serious injuries.
