Pirate attacks are more persistent the farther offshore they occur, the director of Combined Maritime Forces (CMF) has told SASI.rnCaptain Chris Chambers of the US Navy warned that in the Somali Basin - an area five times as large as the Gulf of Aden - pirates were "much more persistent and will prolong their attack". Whereas pirates operating in the Gulf of Aden know that they can abort an attack and wait for another target to appear, "when they're 400-500 miles offshore they know if they don't get on that ship then that may be their only chance," Chambers added.
