Piracy spurs calls for action

Shipping sector organisations are pressing for more effective action against Somali pirates. Thirteen major industry bodies - including the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS), the International Shipping Federation, International Transport Workers' Federation (ITF), Bimco, Intertanko, Intercargo and the International Group of P&l Clubs - have launched an online petition to garner public support for the campaign. The aim is to convince countries to commit more resources to fighting the problem. It is hoped to deliver at least half a million signatures to governments by World Maritime Day on 23 September.
