A leading organisation representingrncargo-handlers has told Safety at Sea International that shippers need to do more to ensure that the safety of vessels is not compromised by misdeclared container weights. "Shippers have to accept that they have a lot more responsibility than they think they have," emphasised Mike Compton, technical adviser at ICHCA International.rnThe group promotes itself as the only global organisation concerned with cargo handling and cargo operation. Its focus is on marine modes of cargo transport, and terminals make up a large part of its constituency. Compton's comments followed a January meeting of the ICHCA International safety panel in Geneva. It then issued a statement urging shippers to declare container weights accurately.
