Piracy has long blighted international shipping. The areas it affects may have changed, but the fear it generates among seafarers remains the same. Modern-day pirates are sophisticated and well organised, and they change their tactics constantly.Nevertheless, more information about pirate operations is available than before and numerous security service providers have sprung up. Yet frustration about piracy continues to grow, as does the pressure to bear arms on board vessels, leading IMO to publish guidance on the use of armed guards.
