Three key factors help to determine safety when it comes to fires in containers being transported by ship. The first is the safety of the cargo itself, the second is the effectiveness of the onboard fire-fighting equipment and the third is the fire-fighting competence of the crew members. While there have been notable improvements in safety margins on the first two fronts, the latter factor remains a concern.Knowledge of the risks attached to a particular cargo and how to manage those risks operationally is a key tenet of maritime safety.
