I write this comment in the week that the judging panel for the 2012 Safety at Sea Awards was convened. As a co-chair of that panel I read through the many entries we received for the awards and marvelled at the innovations that have been made in the pursuit of greater maritime safety. It seems strange, therefore, to be writing an editorial in praise of that most familiar and fundamental of lifesaving appliances, the lifejacket.
