A recognised organisation (RO) is entrusted to inspect and survey on behalf of a flag state administration. It is nominated and empowered by the administration to enforce mandatory conventions and codes. Because of the high levels of expertise and experience expected of ROs they are often drawn from classification societies.ROs have long made a significant contribution to the safety of shipping and to the maritime industry in general. Surveyors' expertise and professionalism has ensured that the industry can meet its obligation to inspect and survey vessels, and also to provide the important checks and balances required when surveying the implementation of the IMO's mandatory conventions.
