Thrane & Thrane's announcement that MVS and DTS would be offered via its terminals (see above) came at Inmarsat's annual partner conference in Barcelona, Spain, in November 2011. The event provides a forum for Inmarsat to present business updates and discussions. One topic the conference heard about was the introduction of a voice distress calling service via FleetBroadband. It would be available with an optional alarm panel and provides full priority access to voice communications in both the ship-shore and the shore-ship direction in emergency situations, Inmarsat explained. With the addition of a red distress button, vessel operators have a pre-emption capability for distress priority calls initiated on the vessel. Any non-urgent calls can be interrupted to give full priority to subsequent emergency communications.
