The International Association of Marine Aids to Navigation and Lighthouse Authorities (IALA) was considering giving a new name for the eLoran (enhanced Loran) concept as SAS went to press. Some reports had suggested that the name Terranav ('terrestrial radio navigation') was to replace eLoran following the IALA Council's 51st session in June 2011. However, the name change remains under consideration. eLoran technology is seen as providing a robust terrestrial alternative to satellite-based navigation systems, which tests have shown are susceptible to interference, including by deliberate jamming. IALA secretary-general Gary Prosser told S4S that a late paper suggesting the change was submitted by the South Korean delegation, "who see great opportunity for eLoran for their operations and want to differentiate it from the old Loran system". The suggestion was set down to be examined at the 52nd IALA Council meeting in early December, and could be referred to the organisation's E-navigation Committee for further consideration this year.
