Daniel Defoe's fictional story of Robinson Crusoe, the lone survivor of a shipwreck washed ashore on a remote desert island, has long captured the public imagination, but do such castaway situations ever happen in reality, asks Stephen Cousins Evidence of such a possible real-life scenario emerged at the end of last year when, following the October sinking of the dry-cargo ship Amurskaya in the Okhotsk Sea in the western Pacific Ocean, lifesaving equipment was discovered on the nearby uninhabited island of Maly Shantar.
