Our navigation and bridge feature, on page 24, asks provocative questions about seafarer skills. The author points out that accident reports in recent years have indicated that "navigational learning and competency often fall short of what is required by STCW". Two of the incidents cited involve vessels running aground on remote islands in the South Atlantic and the Pacific. There are many maritime casualties that could have been averted through better bridge team management (BTM), but these two appear to have been caused by poor BTM.
