Safety at Sea has always been a big supporter of innovative approaches to search and rescue (SAR), from its support of Amver (the voluntary global ship reporting system used by SAR authorities to arrange for assistance to persons in distress at sea) to the 2010 Safety at Sea Award given to Inmarsat for its 505 Emergency Calling Service (in which short-code dialling directs the caller to a maritime rescue co-ordination centre, where a professional SAR officer can respond to the call).
