Nigerian satellites: new tools against piracy

The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) announced in July that it had established a round-the-clock satellite early warning system for combating piracy in Nigerian waters. The new system, co-ordinated from the NIMASA Satellite Surveillance Centre, can cross-reference ship signatures with AIS as well as signals from newly upgraded radar installations in Bonny and Lagos. NIMASA said the system can flag up suspicious vessels, which can be intercepted and examined by security personnel. NIMASA also claims that the network can detect vessels with falsified IMO numbers.
