Nigerian safe anchorage launched

Hopes have been dashed that a safe anchorage off Nigeria would prompt a wholesale reduction in the cost of maritime insurance in the area. The new scheme launched by the Nigerian Government and Ocean Marine Security will create the safe anchorage area (SAA) 10nm off the coast of Lagos. Nigerian naval vessels will patrol the SAA and there will be a two mile exclusion zone to non-admitted vessels in an effort to deter pirate attacks. Speaking at the scheme's launch, Vincent Udoye, director of Maritime Safety at the Nigerian Maritime Administration Safety Agency, said: "This will increase stakeholders' confidence, and invariably reduce insurance premiums hitherto charged by foreign insurance firms on vessels coming to Nigeria as the security risks have now been eliminated to the minimum."
